About College History

History

During the nineteen fifties, womens education was not actively encouraged as per our socio-religious traditions, which prevented women from achieving academic excellence. Though women belonging to the cosmopolitan areas and high society with urban orientation allowed their women folk to be educated, the rest of the society followed traditional educational practices.

In this conservative environment, a group of intellectuals like Pandit Aatma Ram Mishra, Prof. Bumbum Singh Nilkamal, Prof. Parmanand Singh Madan, Dr. D.R Yadav, Prof. Nikhila Nand Mukherji and Shri Narayan Saran Prasad Singh under the leadership of Dr. Badri Narayan Singh came together to create a learning environment for women of this area in the field of higher education.

Women's College, Samastipur was established in 1956 by late Dr. Badri Narayan Singh. It is a leading government college which was initially set up as a Girl's tutorial college and imparted education up to the graduation level. The mission of the institution was to ensure that the privilege of education reached the young women, especially those from the weaker sections of society. It was later converted into Women's College, Samastipur and was accorded its first affiliation in 1964 by the Bihar University, Muzaffarpur up to Degree standard. The College became a constituent unit under Lalit Narayan Mithila University, Kameshwar Nagar, Darbhanga in 1980. At present the college offers honours courses in the faculties of Science, Social Science and Humanities. It is only the center for women's higher education in the district and the oldest one in North Bihar. It got affiliation under the U.G.C Act, 2f in the year 1977.

Intially, it was started in a smaller campus in the heart of Samastipur town and imparted education up to the graduation level. In course of time it acquired an envious bigger campus with the efforts of the College fraternity. Here, the infrastruture of the college has ample space for expansion and improvement. The new campus is still under development. Additional courses was started in the year 2013 with the availability of additional infrastruture. The college has been endowed with a celebrated doyen of national stature in the field of folk music Padma Shree Sharda Sinha. Since its inception, the college has been serving and promoting the interest of the poorer students of this region.
